Bihar Mahotsav: A Grand Celebration of Indian Culture, Heritage, and Community in Germany

Every year, Bihar Fraternity Frankfurt organizes Bihar Mahotsav, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The event has grown significantly over the years, with over 200 performers, including 103 children, taking part in the last year (2024) event. The festival was attended by more than 1000 people, with Indians from all corners of Germany coming together to celebrate the occasion.

On June 1st, 2024, the Indian diaspora from Frankfurt and nearby areas, as well as many of the native Germans, gathered at Saalbau Griesheim in Frankfurt to celebrate the rich tapestry of Bihari and Indian art, culture, and music. The event was filled with dancing, singing, and a deep appreciation for the spirit of Bihar, showcasing a remarkable culture that has inspired generations.

Keeping with our theme of “Keeping Traditions Alive,” the acts at the event focused on highlighting the vibrant traditions and rich history of Bihar and nearby Indian states. Children showcased impressive reenactments such as Sita Swayamvar, (Mata Sita was born in Bihar). The event also featured a poignant portrayal of the Saheed Smarak, a monument commemorating the seven young kids who sacrificed their lives during the Quit India movement for hoisting the tricolor. Additionally, the performances highlighted the importance of education to change lives, as well as celebrated the diverse culture of India through the presentation of Mile sur Mera Tumahara, featuring traditional costumes and dances from all states of India.

Highlighting the fact that the first empire in India was found in Bihar, the first experiment with democracy was made in Bihar, two of the world religions are born in Bihar was an act by kids “Aisa hai apan Bihar”.

The enchanting essence of Bihar culture shines through its vibrant folk dances, which are a true reflection of the everyday lives, emotions, and traditions of its people. Bihar boasts a rich and unique folk dance and music culture that is incredibly diverse. The region is home to a wide array of regional dialects and is inhabited by three primary linguistic groups: Maithili, Magadhi, and Bhojpuri, further enhancing its diversity. These dances, deeply rooted in history, showcase the rich and pure dancing culture of Bihar. With styles that have evolved over millennia, Bihar’s folk dances transported spectators to a world of serenity, joy, and tradition during Bihar Mahotsav. Bihar Fraternity was proud to host the Consulate General of India (Frankfurt) as the esteemed chief guest for Bihar Mahotsav 2024. In his address, he commended the admirable work of Bihar Fraternity and lauded the accomplishments of the Bihari women. He also highlighted the vital role of the internet in facilitating Indian students to soar to greater heights and fulfill their aspirations. Every year, Bihar Fraternity e.V. organizes the Bihar Cricket League in Germany, bringing together teams from cities such as Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and more to compete for the prestigious trophy. Düsseldorf during Mahotsav.

The event received extensive media coverage, including in print and on TV. Performance footages have garnered widespread organic footprint and views on social media creating new benchmarks for this annual event.

Bihar Mahotsav continues to grow in popularity, with this year proving to be no exception. Bihar Mahotsav 2025 will be celebrated on 31st May 2025 with a spectacular lineup of performances that promise to be even bigger and better than before.
